While every person’s particular situation is unique, the following five tips offer advice that can be used by anyone looking for ways to make the transition a bit smoother. Taking the time to apply these tips can mean the difference between lingering sadness or self-pity and finding joy in what’s ahead. especially if we have gone through a difficult time getting over bad breakups

1. Take Time To Process Emotions

Breaking up moving on can be a difficult process, and it is important to take the time to think about how we are feeling. Processing and understanding emotions are part of the healing process and will also help us move toward acceptance. Allowing yourself to experience the full range of emotions associated with a breakup – whether it’s sadness, hurt, anger, or guilt – can provide closure and create space for growth.

It’s helpful to spend some time in quiet reflection, writing down your thoughts and feelings, talking to close friends and family, or speaking with a therapist if needed. By taking the time to process our emotions and understand what we’ve been through at our own pace we can restore emotional balance while increasing resilience in the face of future situations.

2. Create a Closure Letting Go Ritual

Closure helps in the process of regaining some control. Some have described closure as “having a sense of understanding, peace, and accepted finality” of the ending of a relationship. As humans, we order our lives with stories, good or bad.  Mariana Bockarova, Ph.D. in Psychology Today.com describes this powerful concept in relationship breakups.  “When a one-sided break-up occurs, however, it traumatically interrupts the story for the person on the receiving end, particularly if the break-up was unexpected.

By knowing the reasons why the relationship isn’t working, the initiator of the break-up has already sorted out his or her story. However, the person being broken up with is thrust from being in safe psychological territory into an abyss, particularly if the relationship was seemingly safe, secure, and serious.”

Ultimately, we seek closure because we need to re-structure our story about the relationship, our past, present, and future.  It throws into question our trust in our own decision-making.

3. Set Boundaries

Setting boundaries is one of the most important steps in moving on even without a relationship closure conversation. Establishing clear physical and emotional boundaries gives you a sense of strength, respect, and empowerment when dealing with your ex. It’s a healthy way to let them know, if they contact you, that certain topics are off-limits or that there is a limit to how often you will communicate. Boundaries can also help to protect yourself from being exposed to any additional hurt or pain, allowing for a more peaceful transition out and to get over a bad breakup.
